Sciatica Q & A

What is sciatica?

Sciatica is actually a symptom of a compressed sciatic nerve. The large sciatic nerve extends from the lower end of the spinal cord down into the back of the thigh. Sciatica may be caused by serious back problems, including a lumbar herniated disc, degenerative disc disease, or spinal stenosis. A tight piriformis muscle may also compress the nerve and cause sciatic pain. The piriformis muscle connects to your thighbone and lower part of the spine and helps with hip rotation. It runs just above the sciatic nerve, and if it becomes tight or injured through overuse or a fall, it can cause sciatica symptoms.

What are the symptoms of sciatica?

Sciatica pain usually occurs in just one side of your buttock or leg. You may notice the following symptoms:

  • Pain that worsens when you sit
  • Burning, searing, or tingling leg pain
  • Numbness or weakness in your leg or foot and toes
  • Radiating pain that moves down the leg

Exactly where you feel the pain of sciatica can help indicate the cause. For example, if you’re experiencing pinching of the nerve at L5 (the fifth lumbar vertebrae) you may experience weakness in the ankle and big toe.

How is sciatica treated?

Dr. Lobacz uses chiropractic spinal adjustments and manual manipulation to help alleviate the pressure on your sciatic nerve and resolve pain. The adjustments provide for better spinal column alignment, which helps alleviate the underlying conditions causing your sciatic nerve pain. You’ll experience a reduction in nerve irritability responsible for causing inflammation, pain, and muscle spasms related to your sciatica. Chiropractic adjustments are healing, not painful.

How can sciatica be prevented?

In addition to offering relief from existing pressure on the sciatic nerve, Dr. Lobacz offers a program-based approach to help you prevent sciatica in the future. Even when your immediate symptoms resolve, it’s important to continue to receive chiropractic care to maintain good health and nerve alignment. When your nerves are out of alignment, your body just doesn’t work the way it’s supposed to.

If you’re experiencing the numbness and pain of sciatica, make an appointment at Lobacz Chiropractic. Dr. Lobacz can help resolve the pain and prevent it from recurring in the future.
